4WD Accessories Technician Certificate
A joint initiative of the 4WD Industry Council and Kangan Institute
The automotive industry is committed to attracting and retaining suitably skilled technicians. The 4WD Industry Council (4WDIC) has identified that a specialised 4WD training program will help to:
- Engage technicians through learning relevant, new skills
- Help employers by enhancing skills within their workforce and addressing well-documented skills shortages
- Produce well-rounded technicians needed for 4WD vehicles
- Provide a consistent program that can be used as a benchmark for skills assessment, which is underpinned by strong industry collaboration.
The 4WDIC has recognised that with a specialised 4WD training program we can maintain business productivity and efficiency, and create new career paths for technicians, now and into the future.
In an industry-first, the 4WDIC and Kangan Institute have joined forces to develop a program specifically for the 4WD aftermarket industry. With the joint experience of the 4WDIC and Kangan, the program will foster a passion for the aftermarket and feature a delivery methodology that compliments industry practices.
Kangan Institute and the 4WDIC have developed the 4WD Accessories Technician Certificate, to establish a broad set of skills appropriate for working in the 4WD accessories fitting environment. The course uses a blend of some mechanical units, accessory fitting and electrical units. It culminates in a Certificate II in Automotive Service Technology and attendees will benefit from attending additional ‘industry sessions’ specific to the 4WD modification and accessory industry as part of their training.
A pilot program for the 4WD Accessories Technician Certificate will begin on June 03 2021, with an initial group of 10-12 students. Details of the pilot program are:
- It will be open to Victorian students only, as the training will be conducted at the Kangan Institute and Auto Innovation Centre facilities in Melbourne.
- It will run for one day per week (Thursday) for a total of 28 weeks.
- Currently, Australian citizens based in Victoria with no prior qualifications can take advantage of the ‘Free TAFE’ initiative, which subsidises the FULL COST of student fees (ordinarily $4127.75). The only ‘out of pocket’ expense is the materials and consumables fee of $493.75. This is an outstanding opportunity to invest in the professional development of your staff with very little financial outlay.
As availability in the pilot program is extremely limited and expected to fill up quickly, please register your interest below by nominating the names and business location of students wishing to take part. Once the program has been fully subscribed, we will contact the participating businesses with further course details and instructions on how to complete the enrolment process.
An overview of the course content is provided HERE, and further details will be provided shortly.
The launch of the pilot program for the 4WD Accessories Technician Certificate represents a huge step forward, establishing a benchmark qualification that recognises the entry-level skills required to work in the 4WD industry. It also creates a pathway for further education for those students who wish to beyond the Certificate II.
